GMF Core Initiative – Retrofit of Municipal Facilities

GMF is offering funding to support Canadian municipal governments and partners to kickstart projects for building retrofits that improve energy efficiency in municipal facilities.

Municipal facilities include administration buildings, police stations and fire halls, wastewater treatment plants, etc. Most of this funding goes to projects in municipally owned buildings, but a non-municipally owned building may be eligible if it is used mostly for municipal purposes.

The award is open to all Canadian municipal governments and partners, with the objective of helping Canadian cities and communities of all sizes use less energy, which reduces their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improves their air quality.

They are offering funding for feasibility studies, pilot stage, and ground-ready projects. The scope of the projects must aim to reduce building energy use by at least 30%. A minimum of 20% must come from energy efficiency and a maximum of 10% can come from on-site, renewable energy.

Examples of studies can include retrofits for on-site renewable energy generation and storage (such as solar, wind, geothermal or geo-exchange systems), upgraded building components and materials  (such as insulation, walls, windows), upgraded heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and more!

Grants can cover up to 50% of your projects eligible expenses, while financing for capital projects may cover up to 80% of project costs and will be awarded as a low-interest loan of up to $5 million, in addition to a grant that will cover up to 15% of the loan.
